Panic and sorrow have gripped the people of Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State after unknown gunmen struck again in the early hours of Wednesday, leaving many feared dead and several vehicles burnt beyond recognition.
The deadly incident, which happened on the morning of Wednesday, ninth July two thousand and twenty-five, has thrown the busy community into chaos as residents run for their lives. Eyewitnesses told Prudentj2 that the attackers stormed the area without warning and opened fire on innocent people going about their daily activities.
One eyewitness said that one victim was shot dead inside a roadside shop while another person was gunned down inside a tricycle, also known as Keke Napep. Disturbing videos recorded by frightened residents showed the moment people screamed and fled as loud gunshots echoed in the background.
In one of the viral clips, a shocked woman filming the scene was heard crying out:
“Jesus Christ! They just shot someone here. See the person inside Keke.”
Another clip showed thick black smoke billowing from cars that had been set on fire by the attackers. Residents claimed that one of the burnt vehicles belonged to the Anambra State Vigilante Group (AVG). A man, who was running away for safety, said:
“They just set AVG’s white Sienna on fire. These people are well prepared.”
Many people believe that this latest attack may be linked to the growing cult-related violence and insecurity troubling parts of Anambra State in recent times. Only a few weeks ago, a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko — which is close to Ekwulobia — was killed in broad daylight by suspected cultists. Four other people were killed and two were kidnapped in another attack in Oko community not long ago.
The rising attacks have sparked fear among students, traders, and local families who now live in constant worry over who might be next. Many have called on the government, police, and community leaders to urgently step up security and flush out criminals terrorising the area.
As at the time of this report, the Anambra State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement about the incident. Residents are now begging for immediate intervention before more innocent lives are lost.
A student leader said:
“We are tired of living in fear. Cultists and unknown gunmen have turned our schools and markets into war zones. We need the police and the government to do more to protect us.”
Parents and traders in Ekwulobia are also appealing to the Anambra State Government to send more security personnel to guard schools, markets, and major roads. Many shops and stalls have remained closed since the attack as people fear the gunmen may return.
For now, families in Ekwulobia and nearby towns can only pray and hope that peace will return to their communities soon — and that those behind this violence will be caught and brought to justice.
